The forward-folding ears of Scottish Fold Cats originated from a natural mutation first seen in a farm animal in Scotland in the 1960’s.   A local shepherd became interested when the feline gave birth to two kittens that had forward-folding ears.  He took one of the kittens to develop a new breed.  A London breeder determined that a dominant mutant gene was responsible for the folded ears.  In 1971 several specimens that had this characteristic were brought to the USA, and became an established popular breed.

In many countries cats have now overtaken dogs as the most popular domestic pet.  Scottish Fold cats are in that group.  They are sweet-natured and gentle.  Their body is stocky with a broad chest like other British felines, but with a somewhat flatter skull.  The head shape and folded ears give Scottish Fold cats an attractively rounded look.  Kittens are born with “normal“ ears, but at about two to four weeks of age, some begin to develop a noticeable bending forward of the ears.  The Scottish Fold cats ears have their permanent fold at about three months of age.  The ear fold varies in degrees from individual to individual.  They seem to have perfectly normal hearing despite the folded ears.

Scottish Fold cats have a dense, thick and resilient coat that stands out from it’s body.  It should be brushed two or three times a week to prevent matting of the long hairs and to remove loose fur of the shorthairs underneath.  Their eyes are unusually large and round giving them an owl-like appearance.  The Scottish Fold cats voice is quiet and their activity level is moderate.  They are sweet-natured, easygoing and most content when they are around people, although another cat will satisfy their need for companionship if nobody is at home for much of the day.  Scottish Fold cats dislike being alone and their laid-back temperament make them very good with children.
