The origin of this breed is a mystery.  No one knows where the first Abyssinian cat came from, but there are several theories.  Some literature supports the theory that they accompanied British troops returning from Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia) in the late 1800’s.  Other evidence suggests that the ancestors of the Abyssinian cat may actually have been natives of India, imported to England by British merchants passing through Calcutta.  The Abyssinian cat has a coat that is a perfect camouflage in North Africa’s sunburned habitat.  This beautiful feline was almost extinct in Britain in the early 1900’s, but by the 1930’s it had become fully established in the United States.  Today the Abyssinian cat is the fifth most popular feline in North America.

Insure Your Pet's Health

The Abyssinian cat is a lithe, muscular cat of medium length.  The most striking feature of this gorgeous cat is its beautiful ticked tabby coat, which is medium in length and fine in texture.  The Abyssinian cat has a rounded wedge shaped head and expressive gold or green almond shaped eyes.  Their ears are large and moderately pointed.  The characteristic tabby “M” typically appears on the forehead of this beautiful animal.  Four colors for the Abyssinian cat are recognized by the major U.S. breed associations.  They are ruddy (the darkest and most common of the colors), red (sorrel or cinnamon), blue and fawn.  European breed registries recognize additional colors.

The Abyssinian cat is gentle, bold, playful and extremely busy, always seeking to be part of household activities.  Abyssinian cats are freedom loving and dislike close confinement or restraint.  The Abyssinian is not a lap cat, but they are good companions and are people oriented, and sociable with other animals.  This lovely animal has a bell like and pleasant voice but seldom uses it.  This feline would be a good choice as a companion for your family in your home.
